I design, carve and press all my prints in my home studio in Edinburgh. I use Cranfield Caligo safewash inks and Somerset or Stonehenge printmaking paper. My carving tools are Pfeil, and I press with a Woodzilla lever press or my trusty wooden spoon. My inspiration comes from fables and myths, my love of birds and nature, reading and travel.
There has always been an element of pattern in my paintings, and for a long time I added this with potato print. Now I am working with lino a lot of the time, this has spilled into my paintings as well, and I'm using the same blocks as my prints as well as creating specific ones for each painting. My feisty ladies have always featured heavily, along with elements of myth and legend from all over the world, and motifs taken from the natural world. All my paintings are mixed media on board or wood, framed by my partner, Stuart in his amazing handmade frames.
From magazine covers and book jackets to event or business logos, lino print's graphic quality lends it to bold illustration work. I specialise in natural history and portraits with my own twist, but can turn my hand to many subjects. Bantam and bicycles anyone?
I have discovered another real love in teaching. Be it a whole day workshop or a term of evening lessons, there is so much fun to be had making prints and learning in a group. I've run workshops in Wales and Scotland, and teach at the Edinburgh Drawing School. Happy to take enquires about private courses for groups.
