My creative life divides in two quite tidily on the hinge of the pandemic year. Prior to 2021 I was co-owner of Bon Papillon gallery-cafe with my partner Stuart. Post-Covid I have been designing, hand carving and pressing lino cut prints from my home studio in Edinburgh.
I have painted, drawn, printed or written in some shape or form for as long as I can remember, and this year I'm getting into the groove of doing them all at once. My printmaking work is spilling onto my paintings, and my writing often ties it all together in my head. I am primarily a storyteller, and whether making stories with paint or creating images with words, it all comes from the same place. I am a magpie, collecting inspiration from history, travel and my imagination.
In 2024 Stuart and I went on a long wander on our bikes, and the inspiration I absorbed over the year is now finding its way into my work. My lino prints are available to buy in my Etsy shop, link below; please read on to find out more...
Just over ten years ago, while travelling in south Thailand, we met a couple doing the same route by bicycle. I was immediately inspired, but there was one tiny setback. I had never ridden a bike. Fast forward to 2024, after a long learning curve and a few smaller trips in the UK, and worldwide, we set out on our ambitious 'old peoples' gap year.'
Starting from our doorstep in Edinburgh, we crossed the Border Hills, caught the ferry at North Shields and headed off through Europe. A few months later, after many adventures in Netherlands, Germany, France, Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, we hopped by plane from Istanbul to Thailand and set out on the S.E. Asian leg of the journey. This would take us through Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and back up through Thailand to Chiang Mai, where we rested. I did a fair bit of writing en route, but not so much drawing apart from a book jacket commissions (see that page). I'm hoping to write up my notes at some point, and am currently translating the images I scribbled in Chiang Mai into my new prints and paintings.
Hope to have much more to publish over the year, and my art work will be appearing first at the Borders Art Fair in March.
